July 26, 2013; Psalm 85:11 & 12

Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.  The Lord will give you what is good, and our land will yield its increase.

Sometimes the road we travel as single parents can seem rocky; we sacrifice a lot for our children, but there are times when these sacrifices can appear to have been made be in vain; as they go unappreciated, and sometimes despite our best intentions and hard work, things don‘t go as we would like them to.  However, if we are faithful as parents, our efforts, including our missteps, will pay off; we are just not always sure when or how.

I spent hours upon hours, reading to my daughter, taking long walks with her, playing dolls, and teaching her how to live as a good and kind person.  Together we shared many good times, which brought us closer together.

Then the teen-aged years arrived and with them came frustration, and it felt as if all my efforts were fruitless, that no lessons had been learned, and that I had failed as a parent.  Yet, even in the midst of the hardest days, I could see the spark of goodness that lay underneath all of the teen-aged angst and turmoil, and I knew that my faithful love of my daughter would bear fruit, and had put her on a good path in life…

Sometimes it just takes patience to see the results of our love, and it is good not to give up, but to remain strong in our love and parenting.

Let us Pray:

God, please help us to stay confident in your grace, and in our abilities as parents.  Let us remember that our experience as single parents can also give us times of great joy, and of play.  When times get hard, let us remain faithful to giving our children the best of who we are, and to give them a good foundation in faith and love.

Amen
