Monday – September 2, 2013; Hebrews 13:8-9 & 20-21

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings; for it is well for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by regulations about food, which have not benefited those who observe them.

Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Today is Labor Day, a day to celebrate the efforts of all who labor in the USA and throughout the world.  For many though it is a day of rest from our labors, and the last ‘hurrah‘ of summer before vacations end and school starts.  A day off to find peace and some togetherness with family and friends.

Rest and peace are good for us, though they can sometimes seem elusive as we seek to raise our children as single parents and get caught up in the busy-ness of life.

As single parents we have many of the stresses of stay at home parents and working parents, as we have to managed it all: school, home life and work life, and a day off may not seem like much of a break, but it is important to take care of ourselves, to rest, to find peace, to re-charge.  Sometimes however, it can be hard to let go, and let God, but God is with us, and sustains us in all we do.  Though our lives maybe often be in flux and filled with change, Christ stays the same, and is a constant presence of love and support in our world and in our lives.

The grace of God offers us peace and hope and reminds us that no matter where we are, and what challenges we face that “this too shall pass”; but God’s love will remain with us, just as our love for our children is constant and never ending.  Of course this does not mean we are always happy with what they do, but it does mean that no matter what happens, our love for them remains strong.

So just for today, let us rest and enjoy spending time with family and friends, or maybe even just some time alone while everyone else is out and busy!  Whatever we do, we can let go and let God, and trust in the constant presence of Christ in our lives which gives us peace.

Let us Pray:

God, please let us take advantage of this day of rest, help us to find your peace, and keep us strong in our faith.  Thank you for opportunities to enjoy time with family and friends, and to re-charge and re-new ourselves.  Thank you for your constant presence in our busy lives, and for always being a source of strength for us as we seek to raise our children to be good people in our world.

Amen
