Monday – September 16. 2013; 1 Timothy 1:18-20

I am giving you these instructions, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies made earlier about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, having faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have suffered shipwreck in the faith; among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have turned over to Satan, so that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Keeping the faith is not always an easy thing to do, not even for us, as single parents…even though being a single parent can take a lot of faith!

There are times when we can feel overwhelmed by responsibilities, and it can feel like everything we do is a chore to be completed.  At times like these we simply continue to fight the good fight, by meeting each day‘s challenges as they come, turning the results over to the care of God; acting in faith to follow what we feel is right, and hoping for the best.

Of course, few of us are perfect, and at times the results of our best efforts are not always what we hoped they would be.  However, by following our conscience and acting in faith, trusting the grace of God to support us, we can have a clear heart, knowing we are seeking to our best for our children and ourselves, even if a mistake is occasionally made in the process.

Any parenting is not easy, and as single parents, we seldom have a partner to take on some of the decision making…or the heat, if we make the wrong choice.  It is normal to make mistakes, but at least we are here for our kids, to make those decisions.  And if we make a mistake, we can be forgiven, as we were acting in the best interest of our children.

By meeting the challenges of single parenting with faith we are seeking to do the will of God, and to make good choices for our children, but at those times when our faith falters, when we question our decisions and feel shipwrecked, there are always those who can throw us a life preserver: the people in our lives who have met these same challenges, and can offer us hope and advice on how to get back on track, and how to restore our faith…faith in  in God’s love and in our own conscience, reminding us that we are never alone in our struggles!

Let us Pray:

God, please help us to keep the faith, as we meet the struggles of single parenting, and life in general.  Help us to have faith in your grace, and in ourselves.  When that faith falters and we feel in danger of being shipwrecked, please help us to reach out to you and to the help of others, who can pull us off of the rocks, and back into calmer waters.

Amen
