Saturday – October 5, 2013; Lamentations 3:19-26

19 The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall!
20 My soul continually thinks of it and is bowed down within me.
21 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases his mercies never come to an end;

23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”
25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.
26 It is good that one should wait quietly or the salvation of the Lord.

Even in the midst of affliction and trouble…this writer of Lamentations has faith that God’s love is steadfast….and that God is always with him.

Wish I could say the same, but I have faltered time and time again in my faith…because I am very human, and sometimes life can get the better of me.

But even in the midst of trouble and turmoil…and just plain being busy…there is joy and comfort in knowing that God is with us, always and surrounds us with Grace…as promised through the risen Christ…

A true sign of this love is our children, and our ability to be parents to them, despite many obstacles that the world, and we ourselves put in our way.

There is the joy that also comes from spending time with our kids, and watching them grow, although growing up is seldom easy, and neither is raising children…they may be gifts to us, but there may be times when we find ourselves struggling with these gifts and all the responsibility that comes with them.  Any parent experiences trials and turmoil while raising their children, and for single parents it often feels as if we are facing many of these challenges alone; but the good news (as is pointed out in today’s reading) is that we are NOT alone because God is always with us!

God walks with us through surrounding us with Grace and love in the Holy Spirit, and by putting people in our lives who can help us face the challenges of raising children on our own…other single parents, and people who have raised their own children to adulthood.

Both directly and through others God gives us hope and strength that can keep us going through the hard times, the frustrating times, and help us to enjoy the really great times we can have as single parents…and for those times, there is no reason for lament.

Let us Pray

God, help us when we feel like lamenting over our struggles…especially when those laments are justified…help us to remember that you are always with us, surrounding us with grace and love; and that this is a reason for rejoicing!  Thank you for the gift of our children (even on those occasions when we may want to return the gift) and for the support of our loved ones…and for living in the hope of the Risen Christ.

Amen
