The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
“Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’ “
Becoming a single father took a leap of faith for me…a big leap of faith! Although I did not want it any other way, taking on full responsibility for my daughter was scary! I did not have a good track record with taking care of living things, from plants to hamsters to fish, and the cat that ran away.
I have often prayed that God would give me more strength, and more faith, enough to tackle the challenges of single parenthood, but I still I there are times when I felt like my faith was lacking…but as Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel, we have more than enough faith to meet the challenges of life with our children; sometimes we just need to have faith in our faith!
In other words we simply need to trust God, and trust in the power of our faith in God’s love and presence in our lives, and faith that God is present in our lives, though the Grace that surrounds us, the people who care for us and our children.
When faith in our faith falters it is good to have the support of those around us, to help us see the power of God in our lives, just as it is good to help others when they are feeling overwhelmed and lacking in faith — for faith grows when we share it with others rather than keeping it all to ourselves.
When it all works, when our faith is strong it can feel good knowing that we are carrying out a difficult task, and doing our best to raise our children with love and understanding.
Let Us Pray
God help us to have faith in our faith in your love and Grace…even if at times it seems only to be the size of a Mustard Seed, it is more than enough to meet the challenges we face…as long as you are with us! Thank you for the people you put in our lives to help us to keep the faith…and help us to share our faith together so that it can grow, and spread the good news of your love for us…shown in all we say and do, and in the lives of our children.
