Tuesday – November 12, 2013; Psalm 98: 4 – 6

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

As single parents we know that our homes can be full of noise, both joyful and sometimes a little less than joyful…

Our homes can be filled with the sound of fun, laughter and joy, as well as anger, frustration and complaining…and not just from the kids!

Our homes can be filled with the sound of music, TV, videogames, pets, and the sound of slamming doors, pounding feet and loud arguments…

Though we may sometimes get annoyed by all of the noise and commotion caused by our children, this is a reminder that life is happening all around us, and of the gift of new life that is found in our children!

And now that my daughter is growing up, and is a “legal” adult, my house can still be noisy, but in a different way, as she will shout down the stairs for her work clothes, ask for rides or the car keys, and have some of her friends over, where they get into discussions…both deep and gossipy…and more and more often, there is silence as she is gone, reminding me that our relationship will soon move on to another stage…but will never end!

While our children may not always be a source of unbridled joy, they are amazing, can be full of life, and as we grow with them we have the opportunity to experience so much of the world that we may not have seen otherwise!

Life with our children is good, but not always easy, sometimes it can be very frustrating and filled with challenges and heartache…and that is where our faith in God comes in…to give us strength and hope and a little peace in the nosiest of days!  Hope that we are not alone, even when times are tough: God is with us, and so are the people we love, our family and friends who can give us advice, support and a well needed break at times.

Raising our kids can be noisy and messy, but it can also make a joyful noise for all to hear…in our lives, in theirs and in the world, as we seek to raise decent human beings in order to send out into the world…to make their own joyful noise, which can help make our world a better place to live.

 Let us Pray

God, thank you for a life filled with joyful noise…the noise of life happening all around us (and thank you for the peaceful moments we find in the midst of this noise)!  Thank you for our children, and for the gift of being such a big part of their lives, and for them being such a big part of ours.  Help us to remember the joy when the noise can sometimes turn sour, and to remember that we are never alone, never forgotten, and that both joy and sorrow can be a rich part of our lives as single parents!

Also today, we pray for the people and families of the Philippines, and all those throughout the world who are suffering, please be with them as well, as in moments of crisis and pain your children look to you, their perfect parent for comfort and healing.

Amen
