And as for me, this is my covenant with them, says the Lord: my spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouths of your children, or out of the mouths of your children’s children, says the Lord, from now on and forever.
God is always with us, we have no choice in the matter, In this way God is like our perfect parent, who will never leave us lonely or without love and support; as we are never separated from God‘s grace!
Being single parents give us a different perspective on the presence of God in our lives, and the message of today’s scripture reading…as we too are dedicated to the well being and love of our children (as any good parent would be), and have given so much of ourselves to raise them (more or less) on our own.
Just as God does for us, we too love our children unconditionally (well as much as possible), and no matter what they do or where they go, our love will go with our children, and they have no choice in the matter, nothing can separate them from our love for them.
Also like we are with our children, God may not always like everything we do, and at times may even get upset or saddened by our behavior, but will never give up on us.
It is an amazing thing to consider: God is so huge and so incomprehensible to us, commanding the universe and all that is in it…yet, comes to us in ways that we can understand, such as through a simple preacher and teacher, who was executed as a subversive only to rise again and live on…through the Holy Spirit and through all those who follow him; all those people in our lives who care enough to reach out to offer their love and support to us: family, friends, professionals and even strangers!
God is good, and loves us so much as to make a connection with us, and is willing to walk with us through our lives, in joy and in strife, never giving up on us and never letting us down!!!
In this way God is a model of what it truly means to be a perfect parent, eternally patient, eternally loving, and always seeking what is best for us…as we are all the well loved children of God.
Let us Pray
God, thank you for always being with us and with our children. Thank you for the unconditional love you show us, and the direction you provide to us in our lives, both directly and through the people in our lives. Please help us to share that love and understanding with our children as we seek to raise them to be good people in the world, and as they make mistakes along the way. Let us remember that loving them and forgiving them does not mean that all the do is okay, but that our love is not dependent upon whether or not they are ‘good enough’, just as your love for us is also unconditional.
